The footpath to West Kennett Barrow is across the Road from Sidbury Hill at Avebury on the A4. Despite visiting Avebury many times, it took a few
years to brave the hill to West Kennett. It is well worth the walk.
West Kennett is one of Britain's biggest chambered long barrows, and the 10m long interior chambers are open for viewing.
The day I visited was very hot, in June 2005, and the barrow was cool and dark, which added to the feeling of sacredness and age. Many
people had left offerings inside the tomb, some appropriate some not - please remember that metal rusts and leaves marks. |
