Bryn Celli Ddu translates as "the mound in the dark grove" and is one of the most well known neolithic sites on Anglesey (Mon). Anglesey is in North Wales
and was the home of the Druids prior to the Roman invasion. The Romans destoryed the civilisation and groves of Mona to break the Celtic spirit and prevent them from
uprising again. This monument started as a henge of 14 stones and was deliberately filled in as a mass burial chamber
We visited whilst on Holiday in June 2006 and it was a blisteringly hot day (I got really bad heat rash). Despite signed footpaths from
the road, we couldn't find it as one sign was missing and we should have turned left but went straight on. I was determined not to give in and after
about half an hour, I sat down and asked for guidance. My hand came up and pointed North West. It didn't seem possible it was in that direction as there was
a river and trees, but we had a look anyway. We couldn't see it, and then I looked up over the river into the next field and there it was. Luckily there was a bridge right
in front of us. |
